Knowing God
Is God something like an idea or a truth that has to be discovered? Is He like the universe that is still
being explored by our scientists? Is He a concept of man that is being created on a day-to-day basis to accommodate a changing
world of morality? Is He a superman somewhere in time and space that we blame for disaster or call on when we are in trouble?
Lets look at some scripture that I think gives us an insight into some of these questions.
Philippians 2: 6-7 tells us that, “Jesus who is God, gave up His security as God, and stripped
himself (of all privileges and rightful dignity) to assume the external appearance of a servant. He became like a man and
became a human being.” I had to spend some time meditating on this. It boggled my mind to think that the God
of the universe, the Creator of all things, the one who has always existed and had no beginning, would put Himself in this
position. He did this because, He so desperately wanted to have a relationship with the people, He created. What better way
can a person get to know them, then to meet them where they’re at.
1Tim.2:5 tells us that, “there is only one God and only one mediator between God and men, the
man Christ Jesus.” The word Christ means the anointed. The word Jesus in the Old Testament was God whom the
Jews knew as Jehovah meaning one who has salvation or is a savior. Therefore, we can say, “That God became a man
and was anointed to bring salvation or restore a broken relationship to the people He created.” I am constantly
amazed at how much we have to learn about Him. The way He reveals Himself, and the way He thinks, makes me want to spend more
time with Him.
Proverbs 3:6 Tells us “to acknowledge God in all our ways, and if we would, He would direct
our paths.” In the Hebrew concordance, the word acknowledge has some very enlightening definitions. Let’s
explore their meanings.
The first definition is “familiar friend.”
Jesus must be a familiar friend to us. He must be well known to us and we must have an intimate relationship
with Him. We must think very highly of Him and apply ourselves to walk with Him.
The second definition is “advice.”
We must seek His counsel on all of our decision-making, and seek His opinion on our line of conduct
in our relationships with each other.
The third definition is “diligent.”
We must not become lazy in our daily walk with Him. It must not become an obligation or chore, but it must
become a joyful and delightful experience with passion and excitement.
The fourth definition is “discovery.”
There is created in us a revelation of a person showing us a way of reasoning that supersedes our own human
thoughts. We in turn become totally fixed on a hunger for something we cannot find in our everyday experiences of life,
The fifthh definition is “endure with.”
As this process takes place, we must allow ourselves to become pliable, teachable, and submitted to changing
our thoughts to GOD’S thoughts. As we experience His grace, (unmerited
favor), this will empower us and allow this attitude in us to take place.
The sixth definition is “awareness”
There will become a conscious knowing and growing encounter with a person you cannot see with your physical
eye. The spirit in us becomes assertive and active, and it begins to direct our lives. We begin to seek and hunger after this
relationship with this person morning, noon and night.
The God, who produced and formed the world and all things in it, being Lord of Heaven and earth, does not
live in handmade shrines. Neither is He served with human hands, as though He lacked anything.
It is He Himself, who gives life, breath, and all things to all people. He made from one source, one
blood and common origin all nations of man on the face of the earth. He determined their allotted periods of time and
the fixed boundaries of their lands and homes, so that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after Him and
find Him. He is not far from each one of us. For in Him we live, move, and have our being. For as the poets of old have said,
we are His offspring.
